Awful, awful, awful!! I don’t know who taught these people how to cook but they need to go back to the drawing board. The only thing that was worth eating was the mac and cheese. Whatever it is they are serving as “cornbread dressing” should be a crime. Green beans blanched, chicken too dry!! I ordered through Postmates and they gave me what they wanted as my sides as to what I select and paid for. They also didn’t put the extra sides that I paid for in the bag. You live and learn, NEVER AGAIN!
OMG! My family was in the area for a few months and we literally ate at this restaurant at least 2 to 3 times a week. The food was amazing and the plates were always running over. We tried several menu items and we were never disappointed. Delicious home cooking!
The food is amazing. If you are looking for good soul food this is the place to go.
Definitely worth the cost and wait. I seriously felt as though I was eating a plate of food out of my own mama’s oven. However, the cabbage greens were very bland..no seasoning at all but that’s just my opinion. Some people may prefer their food that way. But everything else was seasoned to perfection. And I will must certainly revisit.
OMG the porkchop and mac n cheese and yams....heck it was all good!! Mmmm
Food is excellent. Love the oxtails and pork chops, Mac/cheese, etc. Everything is good. Very pleasant atmosphere, cook, waitstaff, are all friendly. BUT DON'T COME EXPECTING TO POP-N-&-OUT. Bring some church patience with you. PS: The prices are very reasonable. I love the establishment!!!
Southern comfort food at it's best! Everything reminds me of my grandmother's home cooked meals. I always get my order to go, but there are a few tables available. Food is seasoned just right and their delicious desserts are homemade. I like to top their peach cobbler with Hank's Ice Cream next door to take it all the way over the top.
Good home food diner! Friendly employees. Whenever I'm in Houston, this is on my list of places to eat!
This place is disgusting!! The food was not good at all and it was expensive. I had a oxtail plate with mac and cheese, yams and cabbage. They charged me for 3.75 for white rice which should have came with the oxtails. The oxtails was unseasoned and the gravy was clunky and distasteful. The mac and cheese was over cooked and the cabbage taste like water. The yams taste like it came straight out of a can. The restaurant was dirty and unsanitary. The cook's had no mask on and no gloves. The health department should shut them down because this was very unsanitary. I dont recommend this place to my worst enemy.
The decor is reminiscent of an early Anthony Hamilton video. I ordered oxtails, yams, cabbage and Mac n cheese. Oxtails...no flavor surrounded in a thin gravy. Not a onion to be found. Doesn't smothered mean a onion is in it somewhere? The cabbage was boiled, salty and irregularly cut. The Mac n cheese was processed and extremely salty. The yams had mild season but I suspect they were canned. The cornbread was tasty and had a cake like quality to it. This was my first visit here, and my last. It does not live up to the hype food wise. The customer service was awesome, and the establishment very clean. The food...so disappointing :(
I just had lunch from your establishment. I was not satisfied with the food. The side dishes were burned and not pleasant tasting. I had mixed emotions about even posting negative comments, but it is my hope that the next consumer will have a better experience.
Those turkey legs were so tender and yams today were the best ever! Awesome dinner!
The baked chicken was flavorful and tender.
If your ever in H-Town this is a the best place to eat.
Food is incredible and friendly people
Good food but you have too wait a long time to get it
I love this place. I try to visit every time I come here but the wait time is horrendous. The sweet old lady at the cashier, God love her, is the slowest thing on the earth and unorganized. You will order something they will be out of and instead of telling you they are out, she will go ahead and take the order and you will end up waiting over an hour. Later when you inquire about the wait time, THEN she will tell you that they have to cook whatever it was you ordered. The food is incredible but the wait times is many times not worth it. The staff is very nice and the place has a hometown feel to it. Just wish they would retire the lady at the front or train her to be better than she is. It's not intentional, she's just not very good.
Great food but best to call in your order for pick up because the home cooked meals are good.
Food was hot with flavor. Will visit again.
They are polite and cater to you food made fresh and the lemonade is great
Mama's we delicious. It's a little hole in the wall type place, that you might miss if you're not looking for it. I got the meatloaf with the mac and cheese and cabbage, and my girlfriend got the pork chops with mashed potatoes and green beans. Both dishes were some real good home cooking. The staff was super friendly and helpful. It was like we were going over to a good friends house to eat. Please tell your friends about this place, because it's worth it.
Let me say first. The food is phenomenal! Ms. Rachel is always pleasant BUT the speed of service is HORRIBLE!!! I tried it for a second time this is it was a call in. I dont see the point of calling it waiting for 30-45 mins to pick it up only to get there to wait another 30 mins in the restaurant before getting the food.
Great food, but be honest, typical soul food ie salty. slow service. extra points for friendliness though.
Amazing as always! My son and I ordered two oxtail plates with rice, mac n cheese, and cabbage and my daughter ordered a plate with baked wings, mac and cheese and cabbage. Those oxtails were so tender and juicy and the baked chicken wings were flavorful. I love homemade baked macaroni and real cheese and that's just what I got today. My lawd that food was delicious and served at the correct temperature. The cornbread was hot and buttery and just added a kick to the meal. We all left with to-go boxes because we ate half the plates and we were too full to eat it all. I always enjoy Mama's Oven and learn a little bit more about patience and waiting on good things when I go there.
Excellent service and cheerful people. Food is great!!
Mannnnn, I thoroughly enjoyed myself when I ate there. The food was delicious and made to order. Definitely going back after I loose 20 more pounds.
The food is great I will return for more
Small space. Dessert varys. Soul food.
Great southern, home cooking meal. Super yummy!
Smh prime example on why not to come here women is to big
The owner is VERY rude. The service is HORIBBLE!!!! We were told our order would be ready in 30 minutes, but it was over an hour that we had to wait on a call in order. The food didn't have any seasoning. I'll never support this place again.
The wait is ridiculous... If I hadn't already ordered the food and paid for it, I would have been gone.
I ordered my food over an hour ago and I get hear and my food is still not ready....Worst experience ever and they are giving people there food that walks right in.....
The food couldn't possibly be better. I'm white, but this soul food is to die for. I HIGHLY recommend the ox tails, but you really can't go wrong with anything they prepare. It takes at least a half hour to prepare ox tails, sometimes and hour, so please be patient. Artistry takes time. With this pandemic, we always order to-go, so that complicates matters. For example, if you order something for 2 hours in advance, what you ordered might be out of stock at time of pickup. Best to get sides immediately (while they're in stock), and then come back later for the entrees at the appointed time. Also, call about a half hour before pickup just so they know you are definitely coming.I haven't yet tried paying in advance, so maybe that will ensure that they don't run out of what you ordered by the time you pick it up. Will try that next time.Whatever means you use to place your food order, you most certainly will be delighted. Awesome place!
The smothered pork chops were the best! And the service was excellent and courteous. It’s going to be one of our regular stops now that we’ve found it. The food was that good. I had sides of green beans and Mac & cheese and there was so much food left over I had enough for another meal to take home for lunch the next day. Highly recommended.
Amazed how delicious everything was!!! Wish they had a fuller menu during the week but I will have to come on Sunday to try the Broccoli Casserole and Peach Cobbler!!!
Love them. Coming since 1996. Like family
Very good food. HORRIBLE wait times, unorganized as heck, and ran haphazardly. It’s a shame, they’ve been around this long and STILL dont have an efficient system, in getting orders out quickly. AND the menu is small. Do better!
The food is good but expect to wait....a looooonggg time.
Meat loaf is super good
I would actually give 4-1/2 stars. The food was real good. The fish (Friday's special) was flaky and cooked perfectly. The green beans were seasoned just right. The mashed potatoes were VERY good! They seemed to be flavored with (what almost tasted like) Trappey's pepper sauce, giving a slight bit of heat. SO good!!! Chicken fried steak was tender and cooked perfectly. The smothered pork chops were tender and delicious. We liked the mac-n-cheese; real, shredded cheddar, NOT Velveeta. The yams were sweet and syrupy, seasoned with lots of cinnamon. The ONLY drawback was our table hadn't been wiped down. We recommend Mama'sOven.
The oxtails were tasty and tender, I didn't care for the mac and cheese. Green beans and cabbage were good. I can't wait to try the other items on the menu.
4 stars because the food is always good but they where out of alot of things and the food preparers were slow
Stopped in Mama's Oven today for good wholesome soul food lunch. I hadn't been in a couple of years. I was so happy to see that they are still there. I had smoked ribs (AMAZING) and macaroni and cheese with dirty rice. She makes her cornbread just like I make mine which is a PLUS too. If you're in the area, check them out!!!
Listen, I LOVE this place! Their oxtails are always delicious, they’re not greasy, and you get a lot of GREAT food for a great price! This is enough food for 2 people or 2 meals. If you’re in the area, stop by and treat yourself to some true down home southern cooking!
Wow...smothered pork chops and greens! The food is great here. Meat loaf is moist and tasty (hint red gravy), macaroni and cheese is creamy and cheesy, corn bread is light and texture is moist and fine grained. Smothered pork chops are meaty and large (2 per order) mashed potatoes are almost freakishly fluffy-delish and the smothering gravy has just the right amount of salt. The green beans were okay (probably the least favorite)...they have slices of onion and potato. And saving the best for last...the greens (specifically-mustard greens) were amazing rich and green with just a touch of spicy heat. Portions here are large and reasonably priced, out gets very busy on Sunday so expect a wait. Seats about 30. Take out it's good too. Music fits the place perfectly. And the staff are very friendly and helpful. Haven't tried any of the desserts yet...too full and happy.
Feels like home with soul food selection. Oxtails were great, mustard greens needed to be cleaned better. Good lemonade. Overall, good experience.
Best soul food on the south side. MS. Yolanda always greets me with a warm smile and a God bless you. And they make you feel like family.
This place has great soul food without the high price. The people are very nice.
Just ate there this week. The food was delicious. Soul food with an old school vibe. Sisters cooking with love.
